棚橋弘至「もうちょっとお待ちください」発言から4日後にオカダ地元安城大会
年明けイッテンヨン決戦まで2か月を切った現在、棚橋弘至引退試合の相手は発表されていない（会見にてシングルマッチの意向は表明済み）。表に出ている情報から発表までの道筋を検証する。
週末に表明、発表の可能性も。「政治的に無理」と「微妙な交渉」の両説の見立て
11・2岐阜大会にて外道が棚橋弘至に対して外道が「（引退試合の相手が）決まってない……。もしあれだったら、あの……俺、用意しますから。ハイ。言ってください」と発言している。さすがに、その2日後の『WRESTLE KINGDOM 20 in 東京ドーム 棚橋弘至引退』記者会見（4日）では対戦相手の発表があるものと思われたが、9月30日の公開記者会見につづいて“対戦相手の発表なし”。多くのプロレス団体がファンとの信頼構築に前のめりなところで、この新日本の強心臓ぶりは興味深い。
4日の会見では、棚橋はこの言い回し。棚橋「もうちょっと、あのお待ちください。あの、発表します、もうちょっとだけお待ちください」。
同会見から4日後には東祥アリーナ安城大会（8日）が開催される。オカダ・カズチカ（AEW）は安城市出身であり、いやがおうにも「オカダで正式決定か」とのムードが出てきた。
AEWと連携している新日本プロレス。その社長が引退試合とはいえ（AEWと競合する）WWE所属選手と対戦することは難しい。引退試合の相手としてファンに最も期待される中邑真輔（WWE）であるが、ビジネスでの競合状況から「政治的に無理」として語られている。一方で、なかなか対戦相手が正式発表されない背景もあって、WWEとの「微妙な交渉」が継続しているという語られ方もしてきた。
この情勢の中で、中邑が10・17WWE日本公演で「愛してま～す」という棚橋のセリフを使い、「まあできる限りのことはしてるつもりですが、一寸先はハプニングです（10月23日付、東スポ記事）」と発言する。棚橋は2日の大会で中邑の技（ランドスライド）を繰り出した。
「政治的に無理」と「微妙な交渉」の両説が存在する理由。それは、イッテンヨン決戦における中邑出場が「政治的に無理」と早々に却下された反面、元日ノア日本武道館決戦において「微妙な交渉」がつづいていたということではないかと当サイトは推察する。
この見立てで進行するなら、棚橋のイッテンヨン決戦の相手はオカダが有力となり、元日ノア決戦では中邑とのタッグ結成（もしくはタッグ対決）を交渉中なのではなかろうか。少なくとも、イッテンヨン決戦で棚橋と対峙する相手は週末に表明、そして週末から週明けにかけて正式発表が見込まれる。
At the November 2 event in Gifu, Gedo addressed Hiroshi Tanahashi, stating:
“(Your opponent for the retirement match) hasn’t been decided… If you’d like, I can arrange it. Just say the word.”
Naturally, expectations were high that the opponent would be announced at the “WRESTLE KINGDOM 20 in Tokyo Dome – Hiroshi Tanahashi Retirement” press conference held two days later on November 4. However, following the September 30 public press event, there was once again no announcement regarding the opponent. At a time when most wrestling promotions emphasize transparency to build trust with fans, New Japan Pro-Wrestling’s firm stance remains notable.
During the November 4 press conference, Tanahashi commented:
“Please wait just a little longer. We will make the announcement, so please give us a little more time.”
Four days after the press conference, NJPW will stage a show at Toho Arena Anjo on November 8. With Kazuchika Okada being a native of Anjo, speculation has inevitably strengthened that he will be officially confirmed as the retirement match opponent.
NJPW currently collaborates with AEW, and despite the significance of a retirement match, it remains difficult for the company president to face a WWE-contracted wrestler due to WWE’s position as a direct competitor to AEW. Shinsuke Nakamura is the most anticipated opponent among fans, yet the matchup has widely been described as “politically impossible.” Conversely, the prolonged delay in naming the opponent has also fueled suggestions that “delicate negotiations” with WWE are still ongoing.
In the midst of this, at the October 17 WWE live event in Japan, Nakamura used Tanahashi’s signature phrase “Aishite masu” (“I love you all”), remarking:
“I’m doing what I can, but anything can happen in an instant.”

Meanwhile, Tanahashi executed Nakamura’s Landslide at the November 2 event, further intensifying speculation.
The coexistence of the “politically impossible” and “delicate negotiations” theories may be explained as follows: while Nakamura’s appearance at the January 4 Tokyo Dome event was reportedly dismissed early as politically unfeasible, “delicate negotiations” are believed to have continued regarding Pro Wrestling NOAH’s New Year’s Day show at Nippon Budokan.
Should this assessment prove correct, Okada appears to be the leading candidate for Tanahashi’s opponent on January 4, while discussions may be underway for Tanahashi and Nakamura to either form a tag team (or compete in a tag match against one another) at NOAH’s January 1 event. At minimum, an indication of Tanahashi’s Tokyo Dome opponent is expected over the weekend, with an official announcement anticipated between the weekend and early next week.
